My picks for the WSOP main event

With the Main Event due to begin on Sunday, I thought it might be a good idea to spark some debate about who is likely to take down the World Series of Poker main event this year in Las Vegas. For the last few years, the internet kids and the nobodies and amateurs have had a monopoly on the title so I’m convinced it’s time for a pro to strike back this year, so here are my three to keep an eye on.

1. Roland de Wolfe

I wouldn’t be a very good Englishman if I didn’t pick one of our boys right out of the gates. In my opinion, there is no better poker player from our small island than Roland de Wolfe. He is one of only two men to complete the trifecta of winning a WPT, EPT and WSOP event and is more importantly in a rich vein of form having a wonderful World Series. He is currently level in Player of the Year points with Daniel Negreanu and he sits well within the Top 10 performers this year with one bracelet and five deep cashes. De wolfe has a fantastic style that combines raw aggression with sound poker knowledge and a level head perfect for crystal clear decision making. Hopefully, at this point in his career, De Wolfe, I feel genuinely has the game and skill to go very, very deep in the main event.

2.  Daniel Negreanu

Always a hot contender for this competition, “Kid Poker’s” small-ball style is a perfect method for accumulating a big chip stack and always stands him in fantastic stead to go super deep in the big events. He also has a whopping eight cashes to his name in this Series so is in good form but should be hungry for a big result. He has always been one of the players I have identified as being disproportionately unlucky so should the Poker Gods be on his side this year, Negreanu should do very well indeed.

3.  Bernard “Elky” Grospellier

Elky is an extremely talented and exciting young Frenchman with an insatiable thirst for big tournament action who has a style perfect for the Main Event. With fantastic innate abilities and aggressive tendencies, Grospellier has the tendency like Dario Minieri did a few years ago to build a huge chip lead in the early stages though unlike Minieri, I would back Elky to bring things home.

So, there you have my three picks for the Main Event. What are your thoughts? Feel free to leave a comment and let’s see if we can spark some discussion!
