The Civil war did bring about some damage, but not as far as poker is concerned because for it, this was a time of growth as the game continued to develop even more rapidly. In the mid eighteen sixties is when the ‘stud’ came into being. History quotes it had a cowboy related origin somewhere in Illinois Ohio and Indiana. The Jack Pots also had their origins at about this time but back then meant you only had the option of opening when you only had a pair of jacks. The jackpot was received with mixed emotions but it was staying as it had become accepted as a way of throwing in more caution to the game. It mainly discouraged those players that literally bet on anything. Blackridge that was more common in Toledo was compared to the jacks only that there was buying of tickets involved.
In 1864, the hands were listed down as one and two pairs, triplets, full house, fours and straight. By 1875, the draw, jack pots and stud were well engraved into the game of Whiskey Poker. Its important to note that this was as far as America was concerned and not really the world as a whole. The introduction of the straight is blurry since it was not really expected to begin with. It started with the argument that a straight and a flush are better than a full house when they were together in one hand. Some people found the Four Aces that were downright unbeatable to be less interesting in comparison to straights that could be tied. And that is how the four aces lost the domination since the argument has stood the test of time up to this very date.
These misunderstandings led to a dedicated research that tried to revisit the beginning of poker and how it came to be. All the varieties and talked about origins were put into consideration in the research that, as history puts it, was by Frederick Jessel. The idea behind all this was to establish a set of rules that could be universally accepted. This was back in 1904. In the following year all the sweat and hard work that was invested saw the publication of a book, Practical Poker, which was simply described as ‘a game of poker in writing’.
If you know about Texas Hold ‘Em, then you definitely know about the varieties of communal cards. Traces of this were in 1919. Back then Wild Window was the name that identified the case of a card being dealt face up right before the players received their fifth card. The best five card combination with a turn up was the victor. This was replaced by Spit in the Ocean which had its debut in 1926.
It was until recently, in the 1970’s that the world series of poker came into being. At least by then, all the rules were as clear as daylight and the popularity of the game had stretched far and wide.
