I doubt Phil Hellmuth would waste his time on a free site like this. I am not convinced at all. It sounds like the advice he would give, and I know Phil does play online a lot. It's possible it is him, but unlikely.

BIG PHIL'S POKER LESSONS PART 1 : STARTING HANDS

Hi fans, Big Phil here. I've decided to start a step by step, daily poker guide on here. I'm still trying to negotiate a fee for my services with the owners of this site but for now I'm prepared to share my wisdom for free (temporarily).

Ok, first things first. If you want to be good at poker you need to have good starting hand requirements. Don't just play with any two cards, unless you're planning to bluff.

Here are my basic starting hand requirements :

1. TWO HIGH CARDS

Ok, we all know that high cards win hands, and what i reccomend is to start with Jack Ten or higher. Using Jack Ten as a cut off point means you'll be starting with at least one picture card or ace so you'll have a good chance of winning the hand. The advantage of having two high cards is that you'll always have a decent kicker should you and an opponent both have top pair.

2. POCKET PAIRS

Any pocket pair is a good starting hand because your opponent might miss completely on the flop, river and turn and fail to make a pair at all. Obviously the higher the pair the better but you've always got an outside chance of making trips with any pocket pair.

3. BACK TO BACK RUNNING CARDS

Ok, the reason i am specifying that the running cards must be back to back is because it gives you more opportunity to make a straight. You can make a straight with a starting hand of two six but you have more chance of getting a straight from playing five six. The reason for this is because if you play two six, you need to hit three four five to get your straight. If you play five six, you have more ways of making the straight. You can hit more different cards to make a straight. You can hit around the two cards you are starting with. You can hit three up or three down, or one up and two down, several different card combinations to make the straight. If you start with two three then you're specifically going to need one down (an ace) and two above (four five) or three above ( four five six ).

Basically if you start with back to back cards, four five and above, then you have a better chance of making a straight than if you play with connected cards that have gaps in between.

4. SUITED CONNECTORS

These are good cards because they are giving you the option of a straight flush and also a flush or a straight.

5. SUITED CARDS

Any two cards of the same suit are good because they give you a chance of making a flush and if you do manage to hit that flush then you'll be hard to beat

6. PLAYING WITH GARBAGE

I don't reccomend this option
