Sometimes a line or a phrase from a good or bad song jumps out at you and it gets into your head - especially when it reminds you of a time and a place.

Please share it and maybe say the lines, artist and what it reminds you of (or just say the lyrics and artist if you want):

....here's one to start off with...

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night

Waterloo Sunset - Kinks

Reminds me of working in London a while back - it also reminds me of every time I've been rivered at TFPR. LOL.

Well the Devil he had 3 Aces & a King & the Lord he was running for a straight ......
He had the Queen the Knave the 9 & 10 of Spades all he needed was the 8......
Well the Lord he called for one more card & he drew the Diamond 8 .....
And the Devil said to the Son of God '' I believe you've got it straight '' ?
So deal me one for the time has come to see who'll be the King of this place ....
But as he spoke from beneath his cloke....... he slipped another Ace

Love this song :)

I feel wonderful
Because I see the love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don't realize
How much I love you

I never thought you'd hurt me, I guess you live and learn.
When you play with fire you're bound to get burned.
I've been mistreated, I've been used before.
I get kicked in the face and I come back for more.
Well, I won't cry no more...

Firehouse - Don't Treat Me Bad (1991)

What a happy song!
Probably my favorite song, it rocks!
Have a listen.

Its coming round again
The slowly creeping hand
Of time and its command
Soon enough it comes
And settles in its place
Its shadow in my face
Puts pressure in my day

This life well its slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned

In the middle of a caravan in a 4 wheel drive oasis
There's a man with a thought in mind to cash in on the desert races
Got a truck load of yorkshire girls for your harem going places
And the border bums never saw the guns in the whisky cases

Oh Effendi 10cc

Also from headroom by 10cc these

I've never been kissed before
It's been on my list before
A flick of the wrist would always do

But when you get round to it
It's got a good sound to it
Don't meddle around with it
'Cos it's far too wet to woo

(Sung to the tune of "Red River Valley" and "The Sash")

Let me tell you the story of a poor boy
Who was sent far away from his home
To fight for his king and his country
And also the old folks back home

So they put him in a Highland division
Sent him off to a far foreign land
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands
And there's nothing to see but the sands

In a battle that started next morning
Under a Libyan sun
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun

As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
With the blood gushing out of his head (of his head)
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
These were the last words he said...

Oh...I am a Liverpudlian
I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing, I like to shout
I get thrown out quite a lot (every week)

We support the team that's dressed in red
A team that we all know
A team that we call Liverpool
And to glory we will go

Dedicated to all the Man Ure supporters (lyrics in Japanese and Chinese and Cantonese also available)

Love is a burning thing
and it makes a fiery ring
bound by wild desire

(Chorus) I fell into a ring of fire
I fell into, a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down, and the flames went higher
and it burns, burns, burns
the ring of fire, the ring of fire

(Chorus Repeat)

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts, like ours meet
I feel for you like a child
Oh but the fire went wild

Nine Feet Underground - Caravan

There's a place where I can go, where I listen to the wind singing
Songs of happiness I know, and it brings it all back again
Somewhere deep inside of me, there's a song that I can sing
Jigsaw puzzles on a tree, and it brings it all back again
Will the day be warm and bright, or will it snow?
There are people waiting here who really want to know

And sometimes I think of wine, songs and laughter flowing free
People talking all the time, and it brings it all back to me

Will the day be warm and bright, or will it snow?
There are people waiting now who really have to know

Can't you feel it in the air? I wonder what it's meant to be
It's the thought that can't be spared, and it brings it all back to me
Yes it brings it all back to me

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Never understood how she could,
Mean so little to so many
Why does she mean everything to me?

Is it worth the pain, with no one to blame?
For all of my insecurities
How did I ever let you go?

Questioning her good intention
Jealousy's a bad invention
When you push on glass, it's bound to break

Even when she was defensive,
It just gave me more incentive
The more you squeeze, the more it slips away

Music of today?
Some of these artists are older than me and from the very early 90's. Why, there are even some people on this site -younger than the end of the great band, Nirvana.

OK, here's one that's not so old. But it's country.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Don't blink
Just like that you're six years old and you take a nap and you
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't blink
You just might miss your babies growing like mine did
Turning into moms and dads next thing you know your "better half"
Of fifty years is there in bed
And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend a hundred years goes faster than you think
So don't blink

Don't Blink - Kenny Chesney (2007)

Kenny Chesney is, in my eyes, one of the best singers/song writers of today. I never really liked country music until I heard some of his stuff.

This song about the immortal Stagger Lee has been done and re-done by everyone from Bob Dylan, to The Clash, to The Isley Brothers, to Mississippi John Hurt, to James Brown, to Tina Turner, to The Black Keys, to ... ... ...

I still think Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' version tops 'em all: (edited for language)

It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a colt .45 and a deck of cards
Stagger lee

He wore rat-drawn shoes and an old stetson hat
Had a '28 ford, had payments on that
Stagger lee

His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, never ever come back no more
Stagger lee

So he walked through the rain and he walked through the
Mud
Till he came to a place called the bucket of blood
Stagger lee

He said mr motherf**ker, you know who I am
The barkeeper said, no, and I don't give a good
G**damn
To stagger lee

He said, well bartender, it's plain to see
I'm that bad motherf**ker called stagger lee
Mr. stagger lee ... ... ...

(it continues on with the story, building to a crescendo, then eventually coming down with the power of a Tsunami, ultimately wiping the slate clean)

The Isley Brothers version is a good segue into the much fiercer Nick Cave version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xQPFZw4mpE

Then for the main course I give you the Godfather himself. If there is another person in the world as cool as this guy is, I'd like to know about it:

Cheers and good topic PandaFlesh,

~The amazing, Miss Ani Difranco

(please, give her a chance -this humanist poet has never even signed a contract)

They were digging a new foundation in Manhattan
And they discovered a slave cemetery there
May their souls rest easy now that lynching is frowned upon
And we've moved on to the electric chair
And I wonder who's gonna be president
Tweedle Dumb or Tweedle Dumber?
And who's gonna have the big
Blockbuster box office
This summer
How 'bout we put up a wall
Between the houses and the highway
And then you can go your way
And I can go my way
Except all the radios agree with all the TV's
And all the magazines agree with all the radios
And I keep hearing that same damn song
Everywhere I go
Maybe I should put a bucket over my head
And a marshmallow in each ear
And stumble around for another dumb numb week
For another hum drum hit song to appear
People used to make records
As in a record of an event
The event of people
Playing music in a room
Now everything is cross-marketing
It's about sunglasses and shoes
Or guns or drugs
You choose
We got it rehashed
We got it half-assed
We're digging up all the graves
And we're spitting on the past
And we can choose between the colors
Of the lipstick on the whores
Cuz we know the difference
Between the font of twenty percent more
And the font of teriyaki
You tell me
How does that make you feel?
You tell me what's real
They say that alcoholics are always alcoholics
Even when they're dry as my lips for years
Even when they're stranded on a small desert island
With no place in two thousand miles to buy beer
And I wonder is he different
Is he different
Has he changed
What he's about
Or is he just a liar
With nothing to lie about
Am I headed for the same brick wall
Is there anything I can do
About anything at all
Except go back to that corner in Manhattan
And dig deeper
Dig deeper this time
Down beneath the impossible pain of our history
Beneath unknown bones
Beneath the bedrock of the mystery
Beneath the sewage system and the path train
Beneath the cobblestones and the water main
Beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals
Beneath the screeching of kamikaze cab wheels
Beneath everything I can think of to think about
Beneath it all
Beneath all get out
Beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel
There's a fire that's just waiting for fuel

I held your head as you were crying
You said you felt like dying
As your tears flowed like rain
I searched for some compassion
Knowing I was back in fashion
With your lover gone again

As your pleading cut me like a knife
I stopped my beating heart
I didn't want the blood to stain the words
That were driving us apart
And I tried to understand
And I tried to understand
yes I tried to understand

Did you have to kill his baby
And crawl on back to me
Did he try to stop you or maybe
He wanted to be free
And is it worth the pain and lying
To watch the slow mo of us dying
And like a papered over crack
Am I supposed to take you back?

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home!

A popular drinking song, made even more famous by this film!-

Just 1 of many favs:

I don't know who you are
But you seem very nice
So will you talk to me
Shall I tell you a story
Shall I tell you a dream
They think I'm crazy
But they don't know that I like it here
It's nice in here, I get everything for free

Have you been here before
Shall I show you around
It's very pretty
Have you come here to stay
Well, you sure picked a day
My name is Billy
It's my birthday, you're invited to my party down the hall

Where I go, what I'll become or who I am or what I'll be
I'll never know, but I am sure that I'll get everything for free

I'm not troubled or sad
I'm just ready for bed
It's been a long day
Before they switch off the lights
It truly was a delight
They think I'm crazy
But they don't know that I like it here
It's nice in here

Where I go, what I'll become or who I am or what I'll be
I'll never know, but I am sure that I'll get everything for free

Where I go, what I'll become or who I am or what I'll be
I'll never know, but I am sure that I'll get everything for free
Everything for free

I don't know who you are
But you seem very nice
So will you talk to me
