first it was blackball lollies then gingerbreadmen then noddy......

well bugger me. it has now been deemed in our country that the word Eskimo is officially offensive. no more Eskimo pies or Eskimo lollies.

What's next, the removal of French Fries, Afghan and Belgian biscuits? What is to become of the Christmas Turkey or the English muffin. Will the Yorkshire puddings and Devon-shire teas go south? Chinese gooseberries, are they now offensive? FFS....

People of earth get a grip of yourselves.......

It's a losing battle, ynot. You are just going to stroke yourself out. Just refuse to play by their rules. Call things what you want (excepting racism, of course). The people that start this kind of thing have no life and have no friends. They are sad lonely people, looking for vindication and validation in their lives.

This is only an opinion, and not meant as a slur against, or as a condemnation of, a particular lack of intelligence, person or group, who couldnt be bothered to ask themselves, "Does this really matter?".

Why does New Zealand have marshmallows in the shape of little people wearing parkas, anyway?
That's neither here nor there...heh.

What is interesting is that the Commissioner in Ottawa said, and I quote...

"I'll probably get into trouble in New Zealand for saying such a thing, but often there's a sort of `rednecky' element ... The people who get on talk-back (radio) and stuff haven't had time to think through a bit more deeply how the other person might feel."

How does one criticize an entire Nation by saying that eating candy in the shape of 'Eskimos' is um...renecky?
Very ironic...

one can do it easily if they can hide behind the curtain of new wave peeceedom.

do French Fries offend the French?
Jelly babies???
Swedish fish???
etc, etc....

where does one draw the line, and who draws that line? Who in fact has the right to draw that line for all to follow? Who deems that one thing is offensive and another is not for our planet?

Not me! I wouldn't be so presumptuous or arrogant as to expect the world to bend itself to my way of thinking because something may have offended me personally.

Are those people that are not offended easily, branded bigots or some other term because their skin is thicker?

i think jelly babies are offensive to both babies and jelly. I can't believe you'd bring that up.

I don't think they are jelly babies, but perhaps a marshmallow of sorts?
I could be wrong, as I've never seen a jelly shaped baby or a humanoid shaped marshmallow dressed in a little fur coat, no less.

Heh...

Ynot - good to see that common sense and sensibilities still rail agianst the wave of Picciedom that seeks to mind/voice control the individual as a means of suppressing freedom of opinion. 1984 was an awful long time ago and Orwell was as much ahead of his time as Nostradamus was of his.

~someone else but I can't be arsed to scroll up to check

If an eskimo wishes to express his/her right not to be called an eskimo then I for one will certainly feel obliged to call him/her something much worse. And why not? And ynot, yes it is some distressing nonsense that you describe and an affront to one's intelligence and that but sodomy's only a short-term answer.

ynot talks sense, but the sensitive remove it. Isn't it weird when the word sensitive is coupled by its letters to sense, yet one destroys the other?

Trout what you mean sodomy is short term? Better not be, I have just laid a new lawn and if them sods are a short term answer will have to rip up and block pave :(.

not sure why "rip up and block pave" suddenly sounds a little dirty ;)
