Spain - 9/2 (+450)
* Brazil - 9/2 (+450)
* England - 6/1 (+600)
* Argentina - 8/1 (+8000)
* Germany - 12/1 (+1200)
* Italy - 14/1 (+1400)
* Netherlands - 14/1 (+1400)
* France - 14/1 (+1400)

How England are 6/1 and France, Portugal, Holland and World Cup Holders Italy are 14/1 I'll never know.

European countries only win the World Cup when the competition is held in Europe. Brazil all the way for me.

John Obi Mikel to miss World Cup

Saturday, 05 June 2010 11:36

World Cup players are dropping like flies at the moment. Next on the list of players that were, but will no longer be playing in the World Cup is Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel who has withdrawn from the squad.

The Chelsea midfielder has been struggling with a knee injury and rather than risk his club career by playing, he decided to pull out of the Nigeria squad and make sure his knee is better for next season.

"We have dropped Mikel from the World Cup after he told the team he did not want to put his career at risk as his knee injury has yet to fully heal after a recent surgery," team co-ordinator, Emmanuel Attah, told www.mtnfootball.com.

Mikel was rested in the game against Colombia over the weekend and the Swedish coach Lars Lagerback explained "there was nothing wrong, but it was just a precaution".

The player did train with the squad yesterday in Durban but it appears the knee didn't full react the way he would have liked.

Attah also confirmed that officials from the Nigerian camp are currently meeting to decide on a replacement - which must come from the seven players axed by Lagerback who were part of the preliminarily squad.

I looooove these lil flag waving moments...
Each time, french politicians jump on the occasion to try to seduce the nationalist far right voters,
and say that the team players should be forced by contract
to sing the national anthem before match, instead of just listening to the orchestra.

For those who don't know, The "Marseillaise" has probably
the most sanguinary lyrics of all anthems, that could roughly
be translated as follows...

Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived.
Against us tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised!
Bloody standard is raised!
Do you hear in our countrysides
The howling of these ferocious soldiers.
They are coming right into our arms,
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts.

To arms citizens !
Form your battalions,
Let's march, let's march!
Let an impure blood
Water our furrows.

Obviously the premium choice for an international sport meeting.

Hooligans caught in Johannesburg set to be deported:

Monday, 07 June 2010 13:59

Hooligans from Argentina, said to be planning 'acts of violence' during the World Cup have been detained at South Africa's main airport and are to be deported.

The accused all flew in on a flight from Angola, probably thinking they would be able to bypass the systems developed by the South Africa Police Service to stop known trouble makers from entering the country, but that is just us assuming.

"Intelligence indicated that these persons would commit acts of public disorder, engage in acts of violence and provoke conflict with certain fans of opponent teams and other groups from Argentina during the 2010 FIFA World Cup," a statement from the South Africa Police said today.

Police also said that one of the 10 men is out on bail for murder. Nice to see that the security measures put in place seem to be working.

Stadiums

* Johannesburg
* Cape Town
* Durban
* Nelspruit
* Rustenburg
* Pretoria
* Polokwane
* Port Elizabeth
* Bloemfontein

Johannesburg World Cup 2010 Stadiums:

Soccer City

Johannesburg will have two stadiums in the World Cup 2010 and also boasts the opening match, one semi final and the final match of the tournament.

Soccer City is the jewel in South Africa's crown, built in 1987 and with a capacity of 94,700 (excluding Media and VIP's) it is sure to offer a great atmosphere for the lucky few that get tickets and hopefully as the stadium to be used for the first game, provide an excellent springboard for a magnificent tournament.

For 2010, the upper tier will be extended around the stadium, an encircling roof will be constructed, new changing room facilities will be developed and new floodlights will be installed.

Ellis Park

Ellis Park was constructed in 1982 as a modern, integrated stadium offering outstanding sight lines from every seat. The Stadium stands within a world class sporting precinct, barely 15 minutes' walk from the Johannesburg City Centre, and offers outstanding office, security and medical features.

For 2010, new upper tiers will be constructed behind each of the goals, at the north and south ends of the venue, increasing the net capacity by 10,149 seats to a total 60,000.

Ellis Park will host one quarter final match.

Cape Town World Cup 2010 Stadium:

The Stadium

Cape Town is building a new stadium for the 2010 World Cup in the suburb of Greenpoint, 500 metres from the Atlantic Ocean with Table Mountain as a backdrop.

Upon completion, the stadium should seat 70,000.

Durban World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

Durban will boast the new Moses Mabhida stadium, unveiled on June 15th 2006 at Durban's ICC by KwaZulu-Natal's Premier Sbu Ndebele and eThekwini Mayor Councillor Obed Mlaba.

The stadium will be built on the site of the existing King's Park stadium and has been designed as a first-class multi-purpose sporting facility with a seating capacity of 70,000.

The stadium is named after named after Moses Mabhida, a former General Secretary of the SACP.

Nelspruit World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

Construction of the new Mbombela Stadium on open land just eight kilometres north of Nelspruit will confirm the recently rising fortunes of this far north-eastern corner of South Africa.

The Mbombela Stadium has been designed to ensure it enjoys a prosperous life beyond the tournament as an adaptable, relevant multi-sport, entertainment and exhibition venue.

The stadium will be specifically constructed to ensure that it meets all FIFA Requirements and presents a compact and attractive venue for both first and second round matches with a capacity of just over 40,000.

Rustenburg World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

Only minor renovations will be required to bring the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace into line with requirements for a stadium able to host first and second round matches at the 2010 World Cup. The stadium will have a capacity of just over 40,000.

For 2010, essentially cosmetic measures such as installation of new electronic scoreboards and upgrading of the floodlights and public address system will render the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace ready to welcome the football supporters of the world.

Pretoria World Cup 2010 Stadiums

The Stadium

The main west stand of the Loftus Versfeld stadium was completely rebuilt in 1977, and the other three stands have been rebuilt since, creating an impressive arena, that rises steeply on all sides and incorporates some of the country's finest facilities for corporate hospitality.

Minimal upgrading will be required for the stadium to qualify as a venue for first and second round matches, but the floodlights, sound system and scoreboards will all be improved. The stadium has a capacity of 45,000 and this will probably rise to 50,000 for the World Cup.

Polokwane World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

The roof over the existing west stand of the Peter Mokaba Stadium will be removed and replaced by a roof that covers the entire western stand of the new Stadium.

An additional 20 rows of seating will be built around the entire stadium to increase capacity to 40,000.

In addition to the structural work, the Peter Mokaba stadium will be provided with first rate equipment, including an electronic scoreboard in the northern stand, new floodlights, a modern sound system and a fire detection and protection system.

Port Elizabeth World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will have a capacity of 49,500 and will be a multi purpose facility launched at the World Cup in 2010.

Bloemfontein World Cup 2010 Stadium

The Stadium

In advance of 2010, a second tier will be added to the main grandstand of the Free State Stadium on the western side of the ground, increasing the net capacity beyond the 40,000-mark required for venues to stage first and second round matches.

Additionally, new turnstiles will be erected, the floodlights will be upgraded, electronic scoreboards will be installed and the sound system will be revamped to the required standards.

Of course I support England, but Holland have always been a team I like to see do well, cos they always play such attractive football. Same with Spain and Brazil. And the brilliant football you see Barca playing these days, is a style of football Holland first played in the early 70s. So if England can't win, then I'd like one of these to win the tournament.

England keepers the real problem - Iker Casillas

Sunday, 06 June 2010 12:21

Fighting talk from Spain keeper Iker Casillas this weekend. He believes England's keepers will be their weakness at the World Cup this summer because they don't have European experience.

The Real Madrid keeper has questioned the temperament of Robert Green, David James and Joe Hart ahead of the tournament and called in to question their ability to handle big-match environments.

"I can see why both Lionel Messi and Xavi have talked up England's chances at the World Cup because their class is undisputed," said Casillas.

"But their goalkeeping situation is a real problem: none of the keepers have played even European Cup level, that's the highest level you can play at club level.

"And if you have never played in the top club competition in the world, you are going to find it hard to perform at the top international level in the world when even more eyes are on you.

"If you look at myself, Gigi Buffon of Italy and Julio Cesar of Brazil, we are keepers who've all won European Championships, World Cups and European Cups."

Casillas is a great keeper and great players get asked questions and those questions can lead to statements like this. I'm sure he didn't mean to belittle the achievements of David James, Joe Hart and Robert Green and I'm sure he didn't want to try and get into their heads that maybe they are not ready.

Torres might make bench for Poland match tonight:

Tuesday, 08 June 2010 08:12

The team doctors for the Spanish team have dropped the biggest hint yet that Fernando Torres could make a surprise appearance in the warm up match against Poland tonight at the Nueva Condomina stadium in Murcia today.
The doctors, Oscar Celada and Juan Cota, say that treatment has gone as planned, and that everyone is happy. The player has said he feels more comfortable and has more stability on the knee which is still supported.

Torres was ruled out for the rest of last season back in April and had surgery on a torn cartilage in his right knee and it was feared he wouldn't make the World Cup but there is now renewed confidence after scans.

Spain play in Group H alongside Honduras, Switzerland and Chile - they are favourites to progress and with perceived easier games, it might be good for Torres -not having to rush back.

Nani out of World Cup:

Tuesday, 08 June 2010 13:47

Portugal will be without winger Nani for the World Cup after he picked up a shoulder injury last week.

I wanted to write influential winger about Nani but he isn't really, despite having a much better end to the season with Manchester United. He would be with most teams, but with Ronaldo, Portugal can feel confident that they have the best in the business.

However, it is a blow for the player and for the coach as it limits his options.

The Portuguese Football Federation are basically not taking any chances and they have also forwarded the medical file to his club Manchester United but they can now also call up another player as a replacement.

Portugal are in Group F up against Ivory Coast, Brazil and Korea DPR and while we didn't fancy their chances before, this hasn't really helped.

Denmark manager misses training through illness:

Tuesday, 08 June 2010 17:29

In the good old days, they used to play with snow on the ground. In the good old days, when a player was tacked he'd stand up, brush himself off and continue playing. In the good old days football was a contact sport and you were allowed to tackle and make contact and if you did get hurt, there existed a magic sponge that could take away all known pains.

Sadly, not any more. Players are not allowed to touch other players, in case the player they are making contact with falls over, or dives and the referee awards a free kick.

Today, if a player does go down, he stays down and waits for the physio to come on so he can get a mouthful of an energy drink and if he was actually tackled, like they used to do it in the good old days, he will wait for the stretcher and take an extra minute.

Football has changed. Players are soft. It used to be if you got a kick you would run it off, not be subbed and miss the next game. It used to be if you had a cold, you still played, but not these days and it appears it isn't just the footballers, because Denmark coach Morten Olsen has a cold and his assistant, Peter Bonde, has taken training today.

We know what those colds are like, especially a Cape Town cold in the middle of winter, so we hope he gets better and while we are having a little joke, it was probably advisable he didn't take training, just in case he passed it on to any of the players and just in case it really does turn out to be a virus, which is what some are saying.
