I had some tables for sale in a local free ads paper , i agreed my lowest price with the buyer and this is what he sent me . ( And why would he make a over payment ? )

Hello,
Good to read back from you. Am okay with the Tables and also okay with price (£380) as well.
As for the payment: The payment will be made by sending you a certified check, I will also like you to know that the check is going to be an excess/over payment check in which you are yo deduct your actual money for the item then you send the balance to my shipper that will be coming for the pick up. No transaction goes further until the check clears in your bank.
Do not worry about the shipping, i have a shipper that normally handle my international goods. He is going to come and do the pick up of the item after you must have cashed the check, deduct your portion and send the balance to him. Kindly get back to me with your full name and address to have your payment issued to, and also do get back to me with your mobile number.
Hope to read back from you soon,

Kind Regards,
Ben.

Sounds mighty iffy mate, the ads in your local paper and hes talking about an international shipper?. The shipper coming to pick the tables up but you've to send the overpayment to him?. Ben also wants a bit too much information from you. When dealing with free ads cash on uplift is best, never give out your banking details.

Yes its a scam, once you deposit or cash the check you are responsible for the money, all of it
I can print off a certified check from my computer its one of the curse,s of the new computer age a certified check doesn't mean what it used to. I on occasion buy or sell something on craigs list here in the states and i always use these rules cash only and i meet in a public place to make the deal. The crooks have found away to use paypal also to screw ya so cash is always best and remember if you let someone come to your house they then know what you have and where you live...

I wouldn't trust it Den. It sounds to suspicious to me. No one pays more than the agreed price and then asks you to return the balance. Pure and simple, it's a scam.

You should sell it to him via eBay and use pay-pal.
